The DUP have stated there will probably be “main implications” at Stormont if the Overseas Secretary fails to swiftly set a proper deadline to finish negotiations with Brussels over the Northern Eire Protocol.
Days after the EU’s chief negotiator Maros Sefcovic claimed “London has breached quite a lot of belief” with Europe over the protocol, DUP chief Sir Jeffrey Donaldson stated Liz Truss wanted to offer a “clear date” for ending the talks.
“We’d like a transparent date now, we want a transparent timeline in which there’s an expectation of actual progress or the Authorities takes the motion that’s obligatory,” Sir Jeffrey informed The Sunday Telegraph.
“It’s essential that Liz Truss strikes this course of ahead shortly and that we get actual and significant progress on a spread of points, not least of which is eradicating the checks on the motion of products inside the UK inner market.”
Sir Jeffrey wouldn’t specify an affordable deadline for Ms Truss to make progress when requested by the Telegraph, however stated: “January goes to be a completely essential month.”
“If we don’t get speedy and decisive progress, and one aspect or the opposite is kicking the can down the street, this may have main implications for the soundness of the political establishments in Northern Eire,” Sir Jeffrey added.
European Fee vp Mr Sefcovic on Thursday informed German information web site Der Spiegel that issues with the protocol – a technique to preserve a free-flowing land border on the island of Eire after Brexit – meant the UK “broke worldwide regulation” in attempting to get around the association.
